Chinese Restaurant Tapes with the Flux Organ noise machine

from Rod Cooper

2 hours of 4 track quarter inch reel tape. The box is an old Ampex design but the actual tape stock is BASF in excellent condition. The music concrete composition is in the ambient noise style. Tape hiss and other artefacts are present but that's the whole point of it. The source cassette material features Chinese ritual music and some pop. I combine this will several of my sound sculptures including a 2 string motorised drone, a large mechanical oscillator called the Flux Organ (see main photo of it) made from 16 stepper motors and other mechanical electric hurdy-gurdies. One side is more choppy than the other due to the tape signal being fed into a rotating stepper motor that creates an unusual tremolo effect. The opposite side to this is more of a constant changing series of sustained tones that modulate and combine the tape signals via distortion in the mixer
